Retrieval Training Course.

Course Length: 24 hours

In QSA Global, Inc.’s Retrieval Course you will be trained to conduct or supervise the safe recovery of isotope radiography sources involved in accident or malfunction situations.

This course covers a review of applicable regulations, cause and prevention, planning and assessment, exposure determination, shielding and operational guidelines. The course includes a practical lab session retrieving a low activity gamma source and a session for reporting and root cause determination.

  • What are the course prerequisites?
    Students should be or have been a radiographer with actual field experience using gamma-ray exposure devices.  Completion of QSA Global, Inc.'s Inspection Maintenance Course is encouraged.
  • Who is this course for?
    Radiation safety officers and experienced radiographers interested in preventing source retrievals or that may need to be involved in actual source retrievals.
  • What will I be able to do after this course?

    After taking the course you will be able to:

    • Determine root causes of malfunctions of exposure devices and associated equipment that may lead to source retrieval incidents.
    • Plan and execute a safe retrieval of a gamma isotope.
    • Know how to prevent retrieval incidents.
    • Know when and how to make reports to regulatory agencies following a retrieval.
  • Who provides the training?
    A trainer approved by QSA Global, Inc.'s Radiation Protection & General Safety Committee with multiple years of experience in radiographic operations.
  • What course materials & equipment is provided?
    • Retrieval Handbook
    • QSA Global, Inc. gamma radiography equipment is available for use by students.
    • Other miscellaneous materials as needed.

    ***Calculators are not provided but are required for solving the assigned mathematical problems.

  • How will I be tested?
    Practical skills review and a written awareness quiz.
